Marking Decimals on a Scale

0.5 is the same as .5. The zero is used to emphasise that the number is not whole.

0.5 is the same as 0.50 or 0.500 etc. The zero is used in this way to emphasise that there are no tenths, or hundredths etc. It is also a useful way of indicating the degree of accuracy in, for example, measurement.
